So I start my Sunday morning by scanning all news sites and news papers for relevant stories about soccer and in particular about soccer in
Northern Nevada. (Got to check out what the news competition says). Of Course the Reno Gazette Journal being the largest news paper in
Northern Nevada is one of my stops on the internet.
As I go to the "Sports" link on their site I quickly learn that the word "Sports" for the RGJ means "Football" otherwise known as "American Football."
Now I am one to like the game of football as much as any other American sports fanatic. Even to the point of being completely upset because the Niners have gone downhill when compared to the days of
Walsh,
Montana, Rice, Young, etc. However, in a weekend when we got the Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Vikings playing the Wolf Pack Women's Soccer team at Mackay Stadium, the Reno Gazette makes very little mention of the UNR women’s soccer team and does not even offer a dedicated link for a soccer section.
They go as far as linking High School Sports and showing only the football schedule and results! What happen to balanced reporting? Are there no fans for Soccer in
Nevada? Are soccer fans being shone away for being a minority? Are the UNR women playing soccer not worthy?
I think not. I firmly believe that the RGJ has no reporters that are interested or qualified to follow or understand soccer and thus, they don't make an effort to report soccer news in the area. The article reporting the UNR game within their site is an exact copy of what the Wolf Pack has on their site about the game.
Luckily I do tend to feel like a white and shining knight once in a while and for the rest of us, I developed www.CarsonSoccer.com. Sure we are not as big as RGJ but we will definitely report on soccer, especially northern Nevada Soccer.
As for the RGJ not reporting more on soccer. Well I guess it is their loss.
Till my next article at John's Place. I am heading to the UNR soccer game at Mackay at 2 p.m. today!
